Welcome to the Venice Middle School ~ Oak Park South Media Center

We love to have visitors and we love to talk about books! The media center is open before school and closes at 4:25.  Our collection includes current non-fiction books arranged by the Dewey Decimal System (grouped by topic).  We also have amazing fiction books that arranged alphabetically by author's last name.

The teachers in the media center love to help find the perfect book for you!  We listen to what books you liked and use that to suggest other books.  We are also happy to tell you about some of our favorite books!  And... this website is a growing collection of books that have been recommended and are arranged by genre!  So... keep checking back!

Even though we love to help you find books... be sure to check out these two areas: SSYR Books and the Starbooks Choice Books.  The SSYR Books were chosen by the state of Florida as the best books for middle school kids.  In April we will vote for the book we think is the very best!  The Starbooks Choice Books are part of the grant from the Community Foundation of Sarasota County.  These are some amazing books that cover a variety of genres.  Both sections are definitely filled with MUST READ books!!

Check out this awesome book trailer made by Mr. Manoogian at Heron Creek. (A book trailer is like a commercial for a book). We have these books in our media!

We are in the middle of our 60,000 Pages competition! I'm challenging our students to read 100 pages of reading a week!! We have prizes and give aways... And the students who meet and exceed the challenge will get a free ticket to the StoneCrabs game on April 23rd!!  Pretty cool stuff...

Starbooks
The kick off for the Spring Starbook is just around the corner!!  I'm not going to tell you what it is... but it has envronmental issues and adventure!

Thanks to an amazing grant by the Community Foundation of Sarasota County, every student in our school read Theodore Boone: Kid Lawyer by John Grisham.  This program primarily happens in the language arts classrooms and the media center.  As a part of this program, students participate in a shared read of the novel and read another novel independently.  This is our fourth year and we LOVE it!

Do you have an opinion about a book?  See Mrs. Mikarts to find out how you can share your opinion with the rest of the world!
